A Prediction and a Warning

I write this with a heavy heart and deep concern for our nation's future. If we continue down this path of hatred and cruelty toward immigrants, I fear we may face devastating consequences. Should a terrorist attack occur in the coming years—perpetrated by those who were radicalized not by ideology, but by the trauma of being torn from their families and sent to third countries—the responsibility will lie squarely with this administration's policies.

The majority of people seeking asylum in America came here for the same reasons our ancestors did: to escape civil wars, gang violence, despotic leaders, and to build better lives for their families. Most were living peacefully, waiting for their court cases, hoping for the chance to work and contribute to our society. Yet we've been fed lies that these people simply want to live off taxpayer dollars. This is categorically false.

The Alien Enemies Act: A Dangerous Precedent

On March 15, 2025, President Trump invoked the rarely-used Alien Enemies Act of 1798—a wartime law that hasn't been used since World War II—to deport Venezuelan migrants accused of gang membership without due process. Despite a federal judge issuing a temporary restraining order to halt these deportations and ordering planes to return, the administration defied the court order and sent over 130 people to a notorious prison in El Salvador.

This 226-year-old law was designed for declared wars between nations, yet we are not at war with Venezuela. The law has historically been used to target people based on ancestry or nationality during wartime—from German nationals during WWI to the shameful internment of Japanese, German, and Italian nationals during WWII.

What makes this especially alarming is that people were deported without court review, bypassing fundamental due process rights guaranteed by our Constitution. Many of those sent to El Salvador include asylum seekers who fled Venezuela due to political persecution.

Current ICE Raids and Rising Protests

The situation has escalated dramatically in recent days. On Friday, June 6, federal agents conducted coordinated "military-style" immigration raids across Los Angeles, arresting dozens of people at locations including Home Depot stores, clothing warehouses, and day labor centers.

These raids sparked massive protests, with hundreds gathering outside federal buildings in downtown Los Angeles. Police deployed tear gas, pepper spray, and flash-bang devices against demonstrators, leading to violent confrontations that have continued for days.

The situation became so tense that President Trump deployed National Guard troops to Los Angeles on Sunday, with about 300 members arriving to face off against protesters. Federal officials have announced plans to conduct ICE raids every day for the next 30 days across Los Angeles County.

Nationwide, ICE arrested 956 people on a single Sunday—the highest daily arrest count of the Trump administration. However, only about 52% were considered "criminal arrests," while the rest were nonviolent offenders or people whose only offense was crossing the border illegally.

Our Christian Values and Constitutional Obligations

If we truly are a "Christian nation" as so many claim, we cannot allow people to go without shelter, food, or medical care. To deny these basic necessities while claiming to follow Christ's teachings is the height of hypocrisy.

But this goes beyond religious values—it strikes at the heart of our constitutional democracy. Our Constitution grants rights that extend even to non-citizens. When our leaders violate these constitutional protections, we all have a duty to stand up and protect these fundamental principles.

A Call to Honor Our Oaths

I remind every service member—past and present—every member of Congress, every judge, and every cabinet official who has sworn an oath to defend the Constitution: We swore to protect the Constitution from ALL enemies, foreign AND domestic. That oath has no expiration date.

The time is now to stand up and protect the Constitution we swore to defend. To the legal community—every lawyer, judge, and member of the bar—I urge you to consider whether those enabling these constitutional violations deserve to maintain their standing in the legal profession.

The Dangerous Path We're On

We are witnessing the systematic erosion of due process, the defiance of federal court orders, and the deployment of military force against peaceful protesters. This represents an unprecedented consolidation of power, with the administration claiming unilateral authority to decide who is an "enemy" without judicial review.

Children are afraid to go to school, parents are afraid to work, and families in need are too scared to seek help at food banks or health clinics. This climate of fear serves no legitimate purpose beyond terrorizing communities.

The Stakes Could Not Be Higher

History shows us what happens when fear and hatred drive policy. The last time the Alien Enemies Act was used, it led to the internment of thousands during World War II—actions for which the federal government later formally apologized. We cannot allow ourselves to repeat these dark chapters of American history.

We are becoming the very type of authoritarian regime that millions of service members have fought against. The values of due process, judicial review, and constitutional protections that define our democracy are under direct assault.

The choice before us is clear: we can continue down this path of hatred and constitutional violation, or we can remember who we are supposed to be as Americans. The future of our democracy—and the safety of our communities—depends on the choice we make.

The time to act is now. Our Constitution and our values demand nothing less.
